How to get my image to fit into the background?

Depending on which template layout you select, you may see different image size requirements.

To illustrate this with an example, please view the image below (you'll see the different image heights between the two layouts for our Social Post video templates).

These image fields are fixed, and cannot be changed. This is because the animations are specifically crafted to interact with the template (such as the astronaut swimming around the text field above). If the astronaut was simply swimming around a white space, it wouldn't look as impressive and you wouldn't get as much engagement on your video.

The good news is we make it very easy to upload your images to fit!

When you're in the first step of the editor, you can hover-over the image field and it'll tell you the exact dimensions of this area:

Click inside the of the image area (outlined by the red box above) to open the pop-up, and click the "Upload" tab as shown below:

You'll notice the recommended size is once again displayed below the upload button, but don't worry if your image is not an exact match.

We have a cropping tool which allows you to adjust how your image fits the dimensions of your video.

Here is an example of the cropping tool in action, to help you adjust your image to fit within the recommended dimensions:

As you can see in the example above, the cropping tool comes in handy!

However, what if you wanted to fit the entire image you uploaded into the image field? Here's a nice trick to do just that!

How to Fit Your Entire Image into the Background

If you cannot make the entire image you've uploaded fit with the cropping tool (such as including the full milkshake in my example above), we would recommend first editing your image into dimensions that match what Breakout Clips recommends.

You can use a free image editing tool (we recommend canva.com) to create images in custom sizes.

Here's how:

After creating a free account with Canva, click the  Create a design button in the top right, and select Custom Size:

Head back to Breakout Clips, and confirm the recommended image dimensions for your video. In case you forgot, here's a quick refresher:

  • Click inside of the image area inside the editor.
  • This will open the media pop-up.
  • Click the "Upload" tab as shown below.

In this example, the recommend size is 1920x1080 pixels (this might be different for your video as I explained at top of this tutorial, so please double check).

Insert the recommended dimensions into the custom size fields in Canva as shown below, and confirm by clicking the Create new design button.

You'll be taken into the Canva editor, and now you can proceed to upload the image you want to add into Breakout Clips.

Once you've uploaded your image file, click the empty white background space around your image to select the background area.

Click the "Background color" icon as shown below, and you'll see it automatically detects the colors in your image for you (making it easy to 'fill' the extra space with the exact same color).

I have selected one of the "Photo Colors" from above, and see how it fills out my image for me?

Now, of course, this is just one example! You fill this space with a different image, text, or just about any other element that Canva will let you add. The options are endless, have fun with it!

Here's another example:

When you're happy with how your image is looking, here's how to download it.

You can leave the rest of the settings as they are, and confirm by clicking the Download button.

This will download your new image to your computer, and you can now upload it into your Breakout Clips video!

Your image is now a perfectly *snug* fit inside the Breakout Clips image area.

Here are some other examples of image backgrounds which have been adapted using this Canva trick, to inspire your creativity:
