How Videos Display on Instagram
Breakout Clips creates videos in all three of the top aspect ratios supported by Instagram:
- 1:1 (Square)
- 4:5 (Portrait) - This is the default in Breakout Clips.
- 9:16 (Vertical) - Available in our Scroll-Stopper template.
Here's how to switch your aspect ratio inside the Breakout Clips editor.
Since 2022, Instagram automatically converts all videos you post into "Reels".
This does not mean every video you post needs to be 9:16!
In fact, 4:5 and 1:1 are preferred for feed posts as they drive higher engagement (see "Feed Scrolling" below). This is how users will see your videos (scrolling through their feed). π
Here's a quick summary of how different aspect ratios display across Instagram placements:
Aspect Ratio | Feed Scrolling | Explore Page | Reels Tab | Profile Grid |
---|---|---|---|---|
1:1 | Fits perfectly | Fits perfectly, black bars when tapped | Black bars above/below | Fits perfectly |
4:5 | Fits perfectly | Fits perfectly, padded when tapped | Padding above/below | Cropped to square |
9:16 | Cropped to 4:5 | Cropped to 4:5 in grid, fits perfectly when tapped | Full-screen vertical | Cropped to square |
Whatβs the Difference Between Padding and Black Bars?
- Black Bars: Solid black space added by Instagram when the video doesnβt fill the screen, commonly used for 1:1 videos in the "Explore" and "Reels" tabs.
- Padding: A blurred or extended background automatically added by Instagram to blend the edges of the video for a more polished look, often applied to 4:5 videos in the "Explore" and "Reels" tabs.
Here's an example of a feed scrolling view with a 4:5 (default size in Breakout Clips) aspect ratio. It's a perfect fit - with nothing being cropped out/cut off. Square (1:1) will fit in the exact same manner. |
